Research facilities

The ITSM disposes of the necessary facilities to conduct relevant research in the different fields of activity, both numerically and experimentally.

On the numerical side, we are performing numerical simulations with both in-house developed as well as commerical tools. To this end, we are using an institute's own modern computer cluster, that allows us to calculate models with highly precise resolution. For even more complex numerical simulations, we are using the services of the High Performance computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS).

On the experimantal side, we work in a laboratory hall with a square footage of over 600 sqm, which is equipped accordingly to our research activities. The equipment comprises the necessary supply systems for compressed air, steam and hot gas as well as the different test facilities.

  • Model turbine for the investigation of flow and blade vibrations in the last stage of steam turbines. Maximum 3 stages. Features a towing-turbine to keep a constant rotational speed during investigations in part-load operation.

axial-diffuser test rig

  • Scaled model of a gas turbine axial-diffuser, including HRSG.
  • Variable flow profile at the diffuser inlet. Air-operated, Mach-number equivalent.

  • Scaled model of a steam turbine axial-radial-diffuser, including the condensor transition section.
  • Variable flow profile at the diffuser inlet. Air-operated, Mach-number equivalent.

turbocharger test rig

  • Hot gas test rig with separate compressor and turbine train.
  • Maximum turbine inlet conditions: 6 bar, 1 kg/s, 1400°C
  • Turbine operated with combustion gas (propan)

adiabate radial compressor test rig

  • Electrically driven radial compressor test rig.
  • 90 kW drive power
  • Rotational speed up to 120'000 rpm

  • Test rig with a calming section at the inlet for the determination of the fan characteristic.
